Dennis Nikrasch is notorious for developing some of the most complex cheating tactics, which he did so in order to match the progression of slot machine technology. These strategies earned him notoriety. Nikrasch himself earned more than fifteen million dollars by coordinating a crew of highly skilled professional cheaters to win many jackpots from slot machines that he was able to rig. Nikrasch was able to achieve this by rigging the machines himself.
His crew was able to travel around to a variety of casinos located all across Las Vegas without being discovered at any point, indicating that the operation went down without a hitch. However, disagreements amongst members of the squad ultimately resulted in the loss for the whole group.
A Troubled History
When Nikrasch used to call the windy city of Chicago home, he would often put his skills as a locksmith to illegal use by breaking into a number of the area’s mansions as well as commercial establishments. Because he was so talented at what he did, all he needed to do was glance into a keyhole to recall the exact specifications of the key he needed to make.
He was able to establish a reputation for himself, and it wasn’t long before the Genovese crime family sought his assistance. They requested that he break into a wide variety of automobiles, residences, and diamond shops, all of which Nikrasch performed successfully for a considerable amount of time until he was finally apprehended.
On the other hand, in 1961 he was apprehended for an attempted burglary as well as other instances of burglaries that he had committed in the past.
Establishing Oneself as Reputable in Las Vegas
After spending 10 years in jail, Nikrasch was finally freed and transferred to Las Vegas, where he spent his days gambling at various casinos. It wasn’t long before he realized that he had the knowledge, tools, and experience required to control slot machines. Nikrasch just required the use of his locksmith keys and magnets to manually cause the machines to create a combination that would result in a winning prize.
Before being caught in the early 1980s, he was able to amass a few million dollars, but then he was sentenced to an additional five years in jail for the accounts that he had stolen. In 1991, he relocated back to Las Vegas and started working at a jewelry shop in the area. After some time had passed, he went back to the casinos, where he discovered that their procedures had become far more complex.
It’s time to go back to the drawing board.
Nikrasch had never seen the computer chips that controlled the machines before, but he was prepared for the challenge. The machines were now controlled by computer chips.
He was dead set on hacking their systems, but he knew he couldn’t do it alone. As a result, he contacted an old acquaintance from the mafia named Eugene Bulgarino, who was a master when it came to computer software programs. Together, they were successful in breaking into their systems.
Nikrasch spent several weeks studying the owner’s handbook and the design of the machine, trying to locate any kind of loop hole that may assist him overcome the system. Bulgarino bought two slot machines for them to test, and they used those machines for their experiments.
He was aware of the location of every lock, what set off the alarms, and every point of the apparatus that was susceptible to failure. Nikrasch also learned that the jackpot payments are controlled by a computer chip that was positioned in the heart of the machine, which was the key to conquering the mechanism. Nikrasch was able to beat the machine by discovering this information.
Nikrasch was able to alter the jackpot codes that were included inside the chips and download his own, which he then had to upload into the machine. This allowed him to win more money. It was imperative for him to exercise extreme caution during this procedure since the slot machines were subjected to stringent examinations after the awarding of jackpots. If there was any indication that the machines had been tampered with, the jackpot would be deemed void.
After he figured out how to control the machine, he had to shift his attention to evading the security monitoring cameras so that he would be out of the cameras’ line of sight. However, he became disheartened when he discovered that it was eventually impossible for him to do this on his own.
